Massage for Back Pain in San Diego

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek massage — and one of the areas where skilled therapeutic bodywork produces the most consistent, measurable results. Whether your pain is from sitting at a desk all day, a recurring injury, structural imbalance, or chronic muscle tension that never fully resolves, the right therapeutic approach can produce relief that medications, stretching, and passive rest simply cannot replicate. At PB Therapeutic Massage, back pain relief is one of our core specialties and the reason many of our clients first walk through the door.

  • Back pain is rarely just a back problem. The lumbar spine is the endpoint of tension patterns that originate in the hips, glutes, hamstrings, psoas, and thoracic spine — and treating only the site of pain without addressing the full chain produces temporary relief at best. At PBTM, back pain sessions begin with a brief assessment to identify where the tension pattern is actually originating, not just where it's expressing. Your therapist then works the full chain — hips, glutes, thoracic spine, and lumbar — using deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and cupping in whatever combination your body needs. Many clients report significant relief after a single session. Consistent sessions produce cumulative change.

    • Chronic low back pain and lumbar tightness

    • Upper back and thoracic tension

    • Mid-back pain and rib restriction

    • Sacral and SI joint discomfort

    • Hip flexor tightness contributing to lumbar compression

    • Glute and piriformis tension driving low back pain

    • Sciatica-like symptoms and referred leg pain

    • Postural back pain from prolonged sitting or standing

    • Back pain from physical labor or repetitive movement

    • Post-injury back tension and guarding patterns

    • Assessment — your therapist identifies your pain pattern, its likely origin, and which structures are driving it

    • Full tension chain work — addressing hips, glutes, hamstrings, and thoracic spine before focusing on the lumbar to ensure the root cause is treated, not just the symptom

    • Deep tissue and myofascial release applied to the lumbar fascia, paraspinals, and surrounding musculature

    • Trigger point therapy targeting specific referral patterns driving your back pain

    • Cupping (where appropriate) to decompress the lumbar fascia and accelerate tissue release

    • Aftercare and frequency guidance — your therapist gives you specific recommendations for maintaining relief and how often to return based on your pain history

  • You have acute or chronic back pain, recurring tension that returns to the same areas, or postural strain from your work or lifestyle. You want real, results-driven work — not a light rubdown that feels good for a day and fades. Not for: Clients with back pain from a herniated disc with active nerve compression, spinal fractures, or other structural issues requiring medical management should consult their physician before booking. We work alongside medical care but are not a substitute for it. When in doubt, reach out before booking and we will advise.

  • Hydrate well. Be ready to describe your pain — when it started, what makes it better or worse, whether it refers anywhere. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in for the brief assessment. After: Light movement is encouraged — walking, gentle stretching. Avoid heavy lifting or intense training the same day. Some soreness in treated areas is normal within 24-48 hours, particularly after deep tissue work in the lumbar and glutes. Drink plenty of water and apply heat if soreness persists.

  • Please inform your therapist if you have a diagnosed spinal condition, recent back surgery, active disc herniation with neurological symptoms, osteoporosis, or any active infection or inflammation in the treatment area. We will always adapt the session to work safely within your body's current condition. Clients with acute back injuries or recent trauma should obtain medical clearance before booking deep tissue work.

    • Advanced Pain Relief Massage: Our signature session for chronic pain — deep tissue, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy combined for comprehensive back pain relief.

    • Athletic Recovery & Performance Bodywork: For active individuals whose back pain is connected to training load, sport-specific posture, or overuse patterns. Recovery-focused work that addresses the full athletic tension chain.

    • Nervous System Reset Massage: Chronic back pain is frequently maintained by nervous system sensitization and stress-driven muscle guarding. A reset session that calms the nervous system can meaningfully reduce the pain baseline alongside targeted therapeutic work.
