Massage for Hip Pain in San Diego

Hip work at most massage practices means working the outer glute and calling it done. At PBTM, hip pain sessions address the full hip complex — hip flexors, TFL, IT band, glutes, piriformis, deep hip rotators, adductors, and the lumbar and sacral attachments that feed into hip restriction. Your therapist maps the tension pattern driving your specific pain before applying deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and cupping to systematically release each contributing structure. Whether your hip pain comes from athletic overuse, prolonged sitting, postural imbalance, or a previous injury, the approach is adapted to what your body actually needs — not a generic hip protocol.

Assessment — your therapist identifies where your hip pain originates, which structures are most restricted, and how your hip tension connects to your low back, pelvis, and leg
Lumbar and sacral release — addressing the spinal and pelvic attachments that feed tension into the hip complex
Hip flexor and TFL work — deep tissue and myofascial release through the anterior hip and iliotibial band
Glute and deep hip rotator work — specific trigger point and myofascial release through the piriformis, gemelli, and obturator muscles that drive deep hip and sciatic-pattern pain
Adductor and groin release — addressing the inner hip structures frequently overlooked in standard hip massage
Cupping (where appropriate) — decompressing the IT band, glutes, and hip flexors to accelerate fascial release
Aftercare — hip stretches, movement recommendations, and frequency guidance based on your pain pattern

You have chronic hip tightness, pain with sitting or standing for extended periods, hip pain during or after physical activity, or restricted hip range of motion that limits your movement and quality of life. Hip pain responds exceptionally well to consistent therapeutic massage and most clients notice meaningful improvement within two to three sessions. Not for: Clients with hip pain from a confirmed labral tear, hip fracture, avascular necrosis, or recent hip replacement should obtain medical clearance before booking deep tissue hip work. Always inform your therapist of any diagnosed hip conditions or surgical history before your session.

Wear or bring comfortable shorts or loose clothing that allows access to the hip, glute, and upper leg. Hydrate well. Be ready to describe whether your pain is anterior, lateral, posterior, or deep inside the joint — this helps your therapist target the session precisely. After: Hip work often produces a significant release response — a sense of length, openness, and ease in the hip and leg that many clients haven't felt in years. Drink plenty of water. Gentle walking and hip stretches are encouraged. Avoid intense lower body training the same day. Apply heat to the hip and glute if soreness develops within 24-48 hours.
-
Inform your therapist of any diagnosed hip conditions, recent hip surgery or replacement, active bursitis, stress fractures, or vascular conditions affecting the hip and leg. Deep hip rotator work is adapted carefully for clients with hip replacements — always disclose surgical history before your session. Clients with acute hip injuries should obtain medical clearance before booking deep tissue work.

Advanced Pain Relief Massage: Hip pain is one of the most common presenting complaints in our Advanced Pain Relief sessions — comprehensive work through the full hip complex as part of a broader pain relief approach.
Athletic Recovery & Performance Bodywork: For runners, cyclists, hikers, surfers, and other active individuals whose hip pain is connected to sport-specific loading patterns and training volume. Recovery-focused hip work that keeps you moving at your best.
Nervous System Reset Massage: Chronic hip tightness is often maintained by postural guarding patterns driven by stress and nervous system dysregulation. A reset session that addresses full-body tension can reduce the baseline holding patterns that keep the hips chronically tight.
Hip pain is rarely just about the hip. The hip is the body's central junction — connecting the spine, pelvis, and lower extremities — and when it's restricted or painful, the effects radiate in every direction. Tight hip flexors compress the lumbar spine. A restricted IT band loads the knee. An overworked piriformis compresses the sciatic nerve. Skilled therapeutic massage that addresses the hip as a system rather than a single muscle produces relief that isolated stretching and foam rolling cannot achieve on their own.
