Massage for Neck & Shoulder Pain in San Diego
Neck and shoulder pain is the defining physical complaint of modern life. Hours at a desk, looking down at a phone, carrying stress in the upper body, sleeping in poor positions — the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, scalenes, and surrounding structures are under near-constant load for most people. Skilled therapeutic massage is one of the most effective interventions available for this kind of tension — producing relief that stretching, heat, and over-the-counter pain relief cannot fully deliver on their own.

Neck and shoulder tension has a predictable anatomy but an individual expression — the specific muscles driving your pain, the referral patterns, and the postural habits maintaining it are unique to your body and lifestyle. At PBTM every neck and shoulder session begins with a brief assessment to identify which structures are most involved and how they connect to your broader tension pattern. Your therapist works the full chain — thoracic spine, chest, scalenes, suboccipitals, and rotator cuff — not just the surface of the upper trapezius where most generic massage stops. The result is relief that actually holds between sessions rather than resetting within a day or two.

Assessment — your therapist identifies your primary areas of restriction and how your neck and shoulder tension connects to your thoracic spine and chest
Thoracic and chest opening — releasing the anterior structures that pull the shoulders forward and load the posterior neck
Deep tissue work through the upper trapezius, rhomboids, levator scapulae, and rotator cuff
Scalene and anterior neck work — careful, skilled release of the muscles alongside the neck that are frequently involved in chronic neck pain and referred arm symptoms
Suboccipital release — base of skull work that addresses tension headaches and cervical restriction at the origin
Cupping (where appropriate) — used across the upper back and shoulders to decompress tissue and accelerate fascial release
Aftercare — postural guidance, stretches, and frequency recommendations

You carry tension chronically in your neck and shoulders, wake up stiff, get tension headaches, or spend significant time at a desk or on a screen. This is one of our most common presenting complaints and one of the areas where our therapists consistently produce the strongest results. Not for: Clients with acute cervical disc herniation with active neurological symptoms, recent neck injury, or cervical instability should obtain medical clearance before booking deep tissue neck work. Always inform your therapist of any diagnosed cervical conditions before your session.

Hydrate well. Be ready to describe your pain pattern — whether it's one-sided or bilateral, whether it refers into your head, arm, or between your shoulder blades, and what activities make it worse. This helps your therapist target the session precisely. After: Neck and shoulder work often produces a significant release response — fatigue, emotional relief, and a floating sensation in the head and neck are all common and normal. Drink plenty of water. Avoid looking down at your phone for extended periods the same day. Apply heat if soreness develops. Gentle neck stretches are encouraged.
-
Inform your therapist of any diagnosed cervical conditions, recent whiplash or neck injury, cervical fusion or hardware, vascular conditions affecting the neck, or active nerve compression symptoms such as tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms. We will always adapt the depth and technique of neck work to your specific situation. When in doubt, consult your physician before booking and let your therapist know at intake.

Advanced Pain Relief Massage: Neck and shoulder tension is one of the primary focuses of our Advanced Pain Relief sessions — deep tissue, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy applied to the full upper body tension chain.
Athletic Recovery & Performance Bodywork: For athletes whose neck and shoulder pain is connected to sport-specific posture, overhead movement, or training load — recovery-focused work that addresses both performance and pain.
Nervous System Reset Massage: The neck and shoulders are where the body holds stress most visibly. A reset session is ideal for clients whose neck and shoulder tension is primarily stress-driven — calming the nervous system reduces the muscular guarding that keeps this area chronically tight.
