Myofascial Release in San Diego

Myofascial release targets the connective tissue system that surrounds, supports, and connects every muscle in your body. When fascia becomes restricted through injury, repetitive movement, poor posture, or chronic stress, it creates a web of tension that standard massage cannot fully reach. Myofascial release works directly with that system — slowly, deliberately, and with results that go deeper than surface-level muscle work alone.

  • Myofascial release requires a different kind of attention than regular massage. The work is slower, more sustained, and more responsive — a therapist trained in MFR is feeling for the tissue to release rather than applying a predetermined sequence. At PBTM, myofascial release is woven into sessions where it will create the most change, often layered with deep tissue work and cupping to address both the fascial and muscular components of a restriction simultaneously. The result is a quality of release that clients consistently describe as unlike anything they've experienced with standard massage.

    • Chronic pain that hasn't fully responded to regular massage

    • Postural imbalances and structural tension patterns

    • Restricted range of motion in the neck, shoulders, hips, or spine

    • Scar tissue and adhesions from surgery or injury

    • Plantar fasciitis and foot tension

    • IT band syndrome and hip restriction

    • Thoracic and lumbar fascial tightness

    • Tension patterns from prolonged sitting or repetitive work

    • Fibromyalgia and widespread body pain

    • Headaches and neck restriction driven by fascial pull

  • You have chronic tension, restricted movement, or pain that feels deep and diffuse rather than localized to one muscle. You've had regular massage and feel like something isn't quite releasing. You're recovering from surgery or injury and dealing with scar tissue or structural restriction. Not for: Clients looking for a fast, high-pressure session. Myofascial release is slower and more subtle than deep tissue — the sensation is often described as a deep, sustained stretch rather than direct pressure. If you want primarily hard, compressive deep tissue work, let your therapist know and they will blend accordingly.

  • Wear or bring comfortable clothing if your therapist may be working on areas outside standard draping. Hydrate well. Arrive with any relevant injury or surgical history in mind — your therapist will ask. After: Myofascial release can produce a strong unwinding response in the hours following a session — fatigue, emotional release, or a feeling of things shifting are all normal. Drink plenty of water, move gently, and avoid intense physical output for the rest of the day. Many clients feel a profound sense of ease and lightness the following morning.

  • Myofascial release is contraindicated over active infections, open wounds, healing fractures, active cancer sites, or areas of acute inflammation. Clients with bleeding disorders, on blood thinners, or with vascular conditions should inform their therapist before the session. MFR is generally very safe and well-tolerated, including for clients with chronic conditions and sensitivities to deeper pressure.

    • Advanced Pain Relief Massage: Myofascial release is a core technique in every Advanced Pain Relief session — combined with deep tissue and trigger point work for comprehensive pain relief.

    • Athletic Recovery & Performance Bodywork: Myofascial release integrated with sports massage for athletes dealing with fascial restriction from training load, overuse, or injury.

    • Nervous System Reset Massage: Fascia holds the body's stress and trauma patterns at a structural level. Gentle myofascial release during a reset session can unwind deep holding patterns that calming massage alone does not fully reach.
